It is with profound love and reverence that we announce the passing of Luz Abergas Faigal, affectionately known as Ate Luz or Ka Luz, who departed this life peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the age of 88. She was surrounded by the tender embrace of her daughters, May Mendiola and Lucena Sarmiento, son-in-law Jason Sarmiento, and grandchildren JJ Mendiola and Jules Sarmiento, at her home in Cypress, Texas.

Born in Manila, Philippines, Luz was the eldest of eight siblings and a natural leader from the very beginning. She pursued a life of service through medicine, earning her degree from Manila Central University and becoming a surgeon in her homeland. Her journey of healing continued in the United States, where she transitioned into psychiatry, offering care and compassion to those in need.

In 1973, Luz and her beloved husband, Alfredo "Jun" Faigal, Jr., bravely relocated their young family to Passaic, New Jersey, in search of new opportunities. With the support of Jun's sister, Susana Mendoza, and brother-in-law, Dr. Valentin Mendoza, they built a home rooted in love, resilience, and faith. Luz served as a hospital physician at Preakness Hospital and Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ, until Jun's illness in 1975. After his passing in 1980, Luz faced life as a widow and single mother with unwavering strength and grace.

Determined to provide for her four children, Luz retired from medicine and became a foster mother to severely handicapped children—a role she embraced with courage and compassion. Later, she and her children operated two rest homes, continuing her lifelong mission to care for the mentally ill and disadvantaged.

Above all, Luz's heart belonged to her faith. A devoted member of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ), she served for many years as a deaconess in congregations across New York, New Jersey, and Texas. Her spiritual dedication was the foundation of her life, and her service brought her immeasurable joy.

Luz was a loving mother to Cesar (Dodjie), Ferdinand (Von), May Joy (May), and Lucena (Lu). Though she endured the heartbreaking loss of her husband and son, her grace never faltered. Her surviving children—Dodjie of Rockaway, NJ, and May and Lu of Cypress, TX—will carry forward her legacy of kindness, perseverance, and faith.

She is also survived by her cherished siblings: Ruperto Abergas of Edmonton, Canada; Malaya Garcia of Everett, WA; and Teresita Villanueva of Long Beach, CA. Luz leaves behind numerous grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were deeply touched by her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.

To know Luz was to witness a life lived with purpose, humility, and boundless generosity. Her laughter, her stories, and her steadfast devotion to family and faith will remain etched in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

We bid farewell to a woman of extraordinary strength and grace. Her legacy will live on in the lives she nurtured, the faith she upheld, and the love she gave so freely.
