Obituary

Lucy Charlotte Barnett Windham, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at 6:08pm Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the age of 85. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Lucy was born on Friday, February 7, 1941, in Winston, Georgia, to Jackson Arnold "Jack" Barnett and Maxine Rose Swansburg Barnett. Lucy was one of eight children and talked often of her parents' devotion to bringing she and her siblings up faithfully attending church.

Faith and church attendance were pivotal in Lucy's life; she taught Sunday School regularly, served as the church pianist, and shared her musical talents as a vocalist and on occasion, as a guitarist. Lucy's well-lived life touched the hearts of countless people along the way.

On Friday, October 7, 1960, Lucy married the love of her life, Riley Kenneth Windham. They built a life centered on faith and family, and together they lovingly raised four sons. They enjoyed a blessed and happy marriage for 45 years.

In 1981 Lucy made plans to pursue her life-long dream of becoming a teacher. She earned her Bachelor's of Arts in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish and began her teaching career as a bilingual educator in 1987. In 1996 she returned to her alma mater, Sam Houston State University, where she earned her Master's Degree in Educational Administration. She served students and families as head of the bilingual department in her district until her retirement in June 2003.

Lucy always had a wonderful sense of humor and would often say that God must have a special affection for short people. To support her claim, she would jokingly quote part of Matthew 28:20: "Lo, I am with you always." This little diddy never failed to bring a smile and remains one of the many cherished memories her family will carry with them forever.

One of Lucy's greatest joys was her family. Her heart-felt desire was to see each of them commit their lives to God and have a Christ-centered walk of faith of their own.
