LUCY JANE SCHENDEL SMITH, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many, joined her beloved husband Bruce when she departed this Earth on December 9, 2017.  Lucy was born on Long Island, in New York City on June 4, 1925, as the eldest daughter of Stanley V. Schendel and Louise A. Lissauer Schendel and grew up in Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York.  Lucy graduated from Southside High School in Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York in 1943 and continued her education with classes at Columbia University in New York City, and worked for several years as an administrative assistant for JC Penny and NAM.  In 1948, she married Woodie Bruce Smith of Troup, Texas, who was a 1947 graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, Long Island, New York.  After they married, they moved from New York to Texas.  Over the next 21 years, they resided in Dallas, Tx, Old Tappan, NJ, St Louis, Mo and Griffin, Ga.  In 1971, they made their last move to Houston, Tx where Lucy and Bruce resided till Bruce's passing in 1999 and Lucy until her passing.

She retired from the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District after 20 years of service, the last 15 years as Financial Secretary at CY-Creek High School.

Miss Lucy deeply enjoyed the Norchester Garden Club, her gardens, African Violets, scrapbooking, the battleships of WWII, anything FDR and Patton, working the election poles, and volunteering at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.  Her happiest hours were spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was proceeded in death by her husband of 51 years, W. Bruce Smith, parents Stanley V and Louise L Schendel, her sisters Betsy Kommer and Nancy Reusch and her eldest daughter, Kathleen Selleck.

She is survived by her daughters Sharon Margaret Bragg of Rockport, TX, Kimberly Suzanne Maywald of Magnolia, TX, Lucy's sons, B Kevin and wife Renee Smith of Montgomery, TX and J Michael and wife Janet Smith of Cypress, TX. Her grandchildren are Brian and wife Lea and Matt and wife Rebecca Selleck, Jeremy and Shannon Woodard Smith of Georgia, Chris and wife Leah of Bend, Oregon, Blake and wife Allyson Maywald of Magnolia, TX, Crystal Maywald of Victoria, TX, Erin of Montgomery, TX, Shannon of NY City, Shawn of Houston, TX, Kyle of Montgomery, TX and Cody of Cypress Texas and 11 great-grandchildren. (Brandon, Damon, Yvea, Sophia, Lorelai, Sophia, Ava, Brody, David, Ashtyn and Thomas) Numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members will also miss her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to The Houston Chapter of The Downs Syndrome Association or The US Merchant Marine Academy at King Point.
