Loretta Mae Castano

Loretta Mae Castano of Houston, Texas, passed away in her home on September 8, 2026, at the age of 102 after a period of illness. She was supported through this difficult time, as ever, by family, friends, and community. She will be dearly missed. 

She was born on September 12, 1923, in Springfield, Illinois. Loretta received degrees in English and social work from Springfield junior College, the University of Illinois, and Northwestern University. She worked as an English teacher before becoming a homemaker and was a lifelong volunteer. Loretta moved to Houston in 1973 and was a founding member of Kinsmen Lutheran Church. She followed her interests widely from reading to rooting for the Astros and caring for neighborhood cats. Throughout her life she followed a path of strong-willed kindness and service to others.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, and sisters. She is survived by her granddaughter, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and other extended family.
