Lloyd M. Johnson

Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired)

Born April 14, 1935 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Passed away at the age of 85 November 9, 2020 in Houston Texas. Survived by his wife Marlene E. Johnson. Married for 62 years.

Lloyd enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in March 1954, obtained a Commission as a Second Lieutenant at the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, Georgia in September 1956 and after returning to inactive status, served consecutively as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander in the 47 ^th Infantry Division, Minnesota National Guard. He returned to active duty during the Vietnam War in 1967 and remained on active status until his retirement from the U.S. Army in 1990. He held various command and staff positions as a Quartermaster Corps Officer throughout his military career.  He served in combat as a Company Commander, Battalion Executive Officer and on the II Corps Command Staff during two tours in Vietnam. Other significant assignments included: Chief, Petroleum Officer Instruction Branch, U.S. Army Quartermaster School, Ft. Lee, Virginia; Chief, Petroleum Management Division, U.S. Army Europe Petroleum Management Center, Zweibrueken, Germany; Chief, U.S. Military Pacific Command Joint Petroleum Office, Camp Smith, Hawaii; Commander, Defense Fuel Region Southwest and Commander, Defense Fuel Region South, both in Houston, Texas.

Lloyd graduated from Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota in 1958 where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. His military education includes the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Candidate School, the U.S. Army Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course, the Quartermaster Supply Management Officer Course, the Petroleum Officer Advanced Course, the Petroleum Pipeline Technology Course and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, three awards of the Bronze Star medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 8 Stars, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal 1 ^st Class, the Expert Infantry Badge and the U.S. Army Quartermaster School Distinguished Instructor Award. Unit decorations include the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Citation.

For two years following his military retirement, Lloyd was employed by Diamond Shamrock Refining Company as manager of their environmental services subsidiary in Houston Texas.  In July 1993, he was hired by DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Company, the managing and operating contractor for the Department of Energy Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), as the Southwest Louisiana Complex Manager. He remained in this position until November 2001 when, following the terrorist attacks of September 11 ^th , he was reassigned to the Strategic Reserve headquarters in New Orleans as the Project Manager for a major security enhancement program involving all SPR sites. Upon project completion he retired for a second time in April 2003.

In retirement, Lloyd and his wife Marlene reside in northwest Harris County, Texas where they remain active with various volunteer activities. They have three grown children, Kevin (Lu), Tammy Fox and Craig (Diane), six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
