Katie Elizabeth Young, known to us as Katie Bug, was born in Humble, Texas on October 22, 1993 to Shelley Whitlock and Cordy Young. Katie is survived by her parents Shelley and Steven Avenell; her brother, Tyler Avenell; half-brother Carter Young; grandparents Lynda and Robert Whitlock and Gayle and Paul Avenell, as well as a large extended family. In a very few, there exists a magnet inside the heart which draws those around them into becoming a friend. Katie had that heart-magnet which drew others as they experienced her unselfishness, her quick wit, her tender love for animals, her championing those who were lost or broken, her ability to draw some amazing images which she always gave to others, and her sparkling way along life's path as she scattered those sparkles into the lives of others. From Shelley's journal I found a tribute to Katie from her mother, Shelley wrote in 2014 , " Katie's spirit is very unique. She never ceases to amaze me. Her kindness towards those in need is never-ending always putting the needs of others before her own. Her ability to overcome life's difficult situations and move forward with a better understanding of herself, others, and life itself makes my heart break and sing at the same time. Katie is the single, greatest blessing in my life. I am eternally grateful to have been chosen to be her mother. Her spirit makes me strive to be a better mother as she sets a shining example in the way we should all treat others, with love and kindness. Her unique Christ-like ability to not pass harsh judgments on others is what we are all suppose to strive to do everyday. Yet, she, at such a young age, is decades ahead of us all. I stand in awe of our Katie quite often and am so proud of the woman she is becoming." Love you Big Bug, Momma Katie and Shelley were not only mother and daughter, but best friends forever. Shelley was totally dedicated to her daughter, putting Katie's happiness before her own. In Shelley, Katie found her mentor, protector, partner in harassing Steven, complaint department, dream sharer, and endless love giver. Steven and Katie were connected as father and daughter, teasing and tickling, laughing and playing, watching movies and having life adventures together. He bandaged her boe-boe's. He never let her down. He wrapped his loving arms around her when she was eight and never let go. He was always there for her, through the good times as well as the bad times. She called him her dadykins and safely gave him her heart. Katie is not gone. Her influence in the lives of others will be felt for decades as a reminder of how we find happiness by being forgiving, compassionate and kind. Katie we love you and will miss you until we meet again.
