Martha Kathleen (Kinser) Qualls was born on August 13, 1929, in Washington County, Indiana . She was taken to live with her older half-brother, George Kinser, when she was very young, as her mother was dying of cancer. She was raised by George and his wife Helen along with their daughter, Helen (Kinser ) Moncure. Kay and Helen remained good friends and visited yearly until Helen's death a few years ago.

She grew up in Ft. Wayne, Virginia. When her family relocated to Beaumont, Texas, she went to secretarial school in Victoria. She was offered a good job with a law firm before she had finished her degree, and continued working as a legal secretary, eventually becoming head of personnel for the law firm Butler-Binion in Houston. She worked there until about 1978, then worked for several years as a church secretary at Spring Baptist Church.

In 1954, she married Jack Sterling Qualls, who was then working for an oil company and later for the Houston Police Department. They had two children, John and Kathleen. They lived most of their married lives in Houston, then Spring, TX.

Kay loved the outdoors and appreciated good music, birds, and drinking coffee with friends and family. She liked to discuss good books, politics, and ideas about almost anything. She was most happy when she was with family, who will always remember her for making the best dressing at Thanksgiving and chocolate chip cookies that could not be matched (even using the same recipe). She stayed active until a heart attack and later a serious accident slowed her down. She always said she wanted to live until she died, and she did.

Kay accepted Christ as a young woman, and her faith was a guiding force in her life. Until the very end, she could testify to God's work in all that concerned her . She was proud of her children, then later a loving grandmother to her five grandchildren. She is survived by her son, John and his family: wife Deborah, daughter Katherine Roff and her husband Blake, son James Qualls and his wife Meredith, and daughter Susanna Qualls. Her daughter, Kathleen, and her family also survive Kay: husband Reuben, and sons Jared Boggess and wife Charity, son Jason Boggess and wife McCenzee. Her great grandchildren were a delight to her in her later years: Dakota, Jackson, and Arthur Joseph (John's family ) and Titus, Molly, Angel, Sydney, and Phoenix (Kathleen ' s family ) .
