Obituary

Julia Anne Mala, 89, of New York City, passed away in Houston, Texas on December 1, 2023. She was born on March 27, 1934, in New York, New York to the late Rudolf and Katherine Mala.

She is survived by her goddaughters, Anne Locke and Teresa Cannon and many relatives living in Slovakia.

Julia is preceded in death by her parents and her twin sisters, who died at birth.

Julia, known as Julie to her family, was born and raised in New York City on the East side of mid-Manhattan in a primarily Slovak neighborhood. She was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in New York City where she received her Sacraments. After graduating high school, she began working as an administrative assistant at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center – Radiology Department where she worked until she was 72. Julie's career afforded her the opportunity to travel throughout the world, including trips to Australia, England, Ireland, and Asia. She also loved leisure traveling to many other places, including Russia, Africa and to her family's ancestral home of Slovakia. Julie was a great hostess and tour guide to anyone wanting to visit New York City and take in the Broadway shows or the New York Symphony or eat at great restaurants and see the sites.

In 2018, due to the progression of her dementia, Julie moved to Houston to be cared for by her goddaughters, Anne and Teresa. Houston was not new to Julie as she spent many Christmases there celebrating the Slovak Christmas Eve traditions with her extended family.
