Joyce Ann Berghage Lanehart, 91, of Houston, Texas, went home to the Lord on March 9, 2024.  Joyce was born May 8, 1932, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to John Berghage and Fredricka Wolthuis Berghage.  Joyce was active in many clubs in high school and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1950.

In 1950, Joyce began her nursing education by attending Calvin College to study basic nursing and science. In 1951, she moved to the Nursing Lodge where she lived and trained at Cook County Mental Health Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Detroit. She graduated in 1953 and became a Registered Nurse. After working a year at Blodgett Hospital, she received a scholarship to continue her Nursing Education at Boston University.  She graduated in 1956 with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Joyce was inducted into the Nursing Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau, during her time at Boston University.

While Joyce was at Boston University, she met her first husband Anthony Berretto.  They were married in 1957, moved to Bristol, Rhode Island, and had three children.

Joyce was a lifelong nurse and educator.  She began her nursing career as a camp nurse in Colorado and became a school nurse in Rhode Island. Later in life she moved to Winter Haven, Florida, and became a Professor of Nursing at Polk Community College. Joyce was instrumental in educating an entire generation of nurses in Central Florida. She excelled at teaching nursing skills with pediatrics and orthopedics as her specialties.  Joyce continued to educate nurses even after she retired by sharing her knowledge with everyone who cared for her.

Joyce met her second husband, John Lanehart, while living in Winter Haven. They enjoyed traveling and ballroom dancing. In addition to teaching, Joyce enjoyed crafting especially sewing and scrapbooking. She loved creating Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren. Joyce was a dedicated Florida Gators fan and continued to watch Gator Football into her 90s.

Joyce was known for her strong Christian faith. She continued to attend church and weekly Bible study until the last year when her health made it too difficult. She was the Director of Christian Education at her church in Rhode Island and was instrumental in bringing Grief Share to her church in Houston.

Joyce is survived by her children, JoAnn Lemly (husband Dave), Judy Prisk (husband Tom), Sandra Logan (husband Bill), Rheta Lanehart, and John Lanehart; and 10 grandchildren, Tommy Prisk V, Audrey Mueller (husband Jacob), Johanna Prisk, Marina Lemly, Zachary Lemly, Billy Lanehart (wife Laura), Rheta Whittington (husband Eric), Chris Lanehart (wife Rochelle) Nick Lanehart, and Jenny Clinite (husband Mike). She is also survived by brother Tom Berghage (wife Diane) and numerous great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lanehart; her ex-husband, Anthony Berretto; her son, Anthony Berretto Jr.; her parents, John Berghage and Fredricka Wolthuis Berghage; and her brother, Robert Berghage.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 18, at Klein Funeral Home - CyFair Northwest, 9719 Wortham Boulevard, Houston, TX 77065. Friends are welcome to visit with the family beginning at 9 a.m.
