Joyce was raised in Winnsboro, TX by Earl and Minnie Sharp. She graduated from Pickton High School in 1949. After graduation she immediately moved to Dallas, TX to seek employment and shortly after the love of her life Norman Wayne Gist followed. They married shortly after on April 7, 1950. The year of 1952 started off with the birth of their first daughter Charlotte in January and ended with the birth of their second daughter Patricia in December. In 1956, they were blessed with a boy which they named Bruce.

She was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved to travel. She was a faithful member of Southwinds Baptist Church and was a part of the Mountain Movers Adult Bible Study.
