Joseph Larry Varga, born December 23, 1942 passed away on December 15, 2024 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Larry is survived by his daughter Jennifer Bourgoyne (Allen), grandsons Dakota Millwee (Alyssa), Griffin Millwee and Cash Bourgoyne, younger brother Craig Varga, nephews Jonathan Varga (Shawna) and Anthony Varga (Christy), sister-in-law Carol Varga, and niece Viki Varga (Patrick), long time family friend Ingrid Maldonado, many dear cousins and numerous other friends and family, including Joyce Scott, and the many good neighbors of North Hills Estates, when he wasn't feuding with them.
Larry was proceeded in death by his wife Ruth, daughter Sherry Caine and his twin brother Jerry Varga. No doubt there will be a joyous reunion with his beloved parents and Little Grandma (Sentesi) as well.
Larry retired from a thirty plus year career at Schlumberger, where many of his best memories were made. There wasn't a part he couldn't locate in the warehouse, or a company picnic where he wouldn't be manning the BBQ grill, cold Dr. Pepper or Lone Star beer in hand. He was also once a proud employee of the Houston Chronicle back in the day, and boy, did he love to read the obituaries.
One day while visiting the family cemetery, Larry said to his daughter Jennifer about life, "I think we did pretty good. We sure had fun!"
We will miss you, Dad. You were one of a kind. You will always be known as the guy that introduced your daughters to Houston Wrestling, Harry Nilsson putting the lime in the Coconut, swimming in Barton Springs, road trips to Kerrville/Center Point, Sunday meals at Little Grandma's property along I-45, the joys of El Palenque, your love of cats, especially your Sunnys (1-3), your love of John Wayne and how strangers would mistake you for Wilford Brimley. You always brought Sunday morning Shipley's to us. You knew your way around a kitchen. Nobody made a better Chicken Paprikash. You nicknamed yourself "The Mad Hungarian" and "Gunner", or if you were in a mood, sometimes you were just "The D.A." No one ever drove a red Ford Gran Torino better than you, not even Starsky or Hutch. You were one of the the toughest, gruffest men in all of Texas, yet you loved putting together pretty little collages, artwork and floral arrangements around your beautifully kept home. You sure kept us all on our toes as no one ever wanted to encounter "the wrath of Varga", but then in an instant, you'd get that twinkle in your eye and drop some hilarious quip that would cause us to burst out laughing. The day of your diagnosis at the neurologist's office, you walked out and announced loudly to the entire waiting room as you left, "Welp, the doctor said my pap smear came out just fine!"
Even though you requested no funeral or services, you did pick out the photo used in this obituary because you said, "Use this one in the paper. I like this one. I look cool."
