In Loving Memory of Joseph Douglas Long, Jr.

October 6, 1949 – December 2, 2025

Born on October 6, 1949, Joe grew up in Spring Branch and graduated high school in 1967. On weekends, he could be found at the family bay house in Palacios, where he spent countless hours fishing with his grandparents and family, and eating his body weight in fried fish. He was baptized at the age of 8 at Long Point Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending summers camping in Colorado and New Mexico with family.

After graduating from the University of Houston in 1972, Joe began his career with Humble Oil & Refining, which later became ExxonMobil. He devoted 35 years to the company before retiring in 2006.

Joe was blessed with the privilege of spending his life with his lovely wife, Nancy. They joined Good Shepherd Methodist Church after retiring and moving to Cypress and have been members for 18 years. The two were inseparable partners in every adventure, moving through life as a team. She was his greatest companion and the joy of his heart.

He was also the proud uncle to a niece and nephew, for whom he made it a mission to provide the loudest, most obnoxious toys known to mankind to the children's delight and his sister's dismay.

Joe enjoyed a life packed with hobbies, from men's softball and bowling to horseback riding and, of course, his true passions: saltwater fishing and outdoor photography. He spent his retirement enjoying many of his hobbies as well as exploring the world with travel and cruising, gardening, and spending time with his men's coffee club solving the world's problems.

Joe's life was full of laughter, love, and a sincerity that made everyone feel welcome. He will be dearly missed by family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to share a fish fry, a campfire, or a good story with him.

Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy, of 51 years; his sister, Judy Garrison, and brother-in-law, Bill Garrison; his nephew, Jeff Garrison, and his wife, Kelly Garrison, along with their children Kyle, Luke, Max, and Nate; and his niece, Jodie Rodriguez, her husband, J.R. Rodriguez, and their sons, Alex and Wes. He is also remembered dearly by extended family and many friends who will miss his humor, kindness, and companionship.
