Joseph Kemei Obituary
Born on March 17,1955 in Moiben, Uasin Gishu, Kenya. Joseph grew up in Moiben; he attended St. Patrick's High School, a legendary school in Iten, Kenya, known around the world for producing some of the best middle- and long-distance runners. In 1974, he left to attend University in the United States on a scholarship to run cross country and track and field for West Texas A&M University (formerly West Texas State). He had never ran in a cross-country meet before and proceeded to break meet and school records practically every time he ran. He became West Texas A&M University’s (WTAMU) first track All-American in February 1976. He was inducted into the WTAMU Hall of Champions in 2003. At WTAMU, he received his Bachelor's degree in Plant Science. He later attended Mississippi State University where he received a Master of Science in Agronomy - Seed Technology.
Joseph was humble and had a quiet spirit; his life was shaped by the things he cared deeply about and the passions that gave him purpose including the value of education and hard work which he impressed upon his children and grandchildren. Through Joseph's work in agriculture, his knowledge, dedication and love for the land were evident and he had the opportunity to travel to different parts of the world and experience a variety of cultures. These experiences became part of the stories he shared with his family, giving them glimpses into the places he had seen and the people he had encountered along the way.
As a brother, friend, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, Joseph leaves behind stories, wisdom, laughter, and countless moments that will continue to be cherished by those who knew and loved him. Like the plants he so carefully nurtured, Joseph’s life leaves a lasting legacy that will continue to grow through his family and the generations to come. His final year brought significant health challenges, but it also brought a sense of peace and acceptance. As he faced these challenges, his faith was deepened and he found a different perspective and an appreciation for the people and moments that mattered most. His final chapter was one of reflection, grace, and, ultimately, peace. He will be remembered for his strength, perseverance, determination, hard work ethic, and the importance of faith in God; and most of all, as one whose life became part of the lives of those who loved him.
He is survived by his wife Rose Kemei; his daughters, Nicole Kemei, Gladys Browman, and husband John, Yvonne Kemei-Mohn and husband Chris, son Kiptoo Kemei and wife Lauren. His grandchildren Nehemia, Ella, and Faith Browman; Everest and Eliyanah Mohn. Kogo Esther (Kogo Queen), Kogo Emily (Happy Kogo), brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and other extended family members who loved him.
In November 2025, Joseph went into surgery to remove a benign brain tumor. Sadly, the surgery led to serious complications which he did not recover from. Eventually his care shifted to comfort and on August 5th, 2026, Joseph Kipsaat Kemei passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus.
His family and friends will carry his memory forward with gratitude and thanksgiving for the time they shared, the lessons he left behind, and the moments that will always remain.
