Joseph Richard Hammons passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Hammons, his sisters Phyllis Moran, Debra Dykes, Leann Windmiller, Marsha Martin and husband Tommy, his brothers Norman "Greg" Newsom and wife Pam, Ron McLeroy and Rodney Myers, his sons Michael Hammons and wife Evenly, Douglas Myers and wife Linda, his daughters Wendi Martinez and husband Juan, Kimberly Myers, his grandchildren Zachary, Mason, and Jackson Hammons, Emery Gonzalez and husband Rene, Ashley, Blake, and Chrissy Balcerek, Kaydie Dunbar, Jennifer Martinez, and his great granddaughter Aliana Gonzalez, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and countless family and friends.
Joseph Hammons is preceded in death by his father Thomas Dykes, his mother Geraldin Waldo, his stepmothers Linda and Francis, and his brothers William "Billy" Dykes, Andy Hammons, Danny Dykes, Clifton "Rusty" Hiltz, and Wesley Dykes.
Joseph Hammons was born in Arkansas on April 10, 1949. After completing his High School education, he joined the United States Army in September of 1969 where he honorably severed until September 1971 and earned the rank of Sergeant. During his military service, he did a 10-month tour in the Panama Canal. Shortly after returning from the military Joseph Hammons joined the Houston Police Department on November 12, 1973, Academy Class #62. During his tenure with the department, he was assigned to the Traffic and Accident, Special Operations, and Narcotics Divisions. Joseph Hammons honorably retired on September 10, 1994. After retiring from the Houston Police Department, he opened his own Private Investigations and Process Serving business, Hammons and Associates. Joseph Hammons spent the majority of his life in service to his Country and his Community. When Joseph Hammons was not serving his community, he enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Joseph Hammons was a member of the Houston Police Officers association, Texas Police Officers Association, Texas Process Servers Association, and the American Legion Post 324.
A memorial service will be held at the Klein Funeral Home, located at 9719 Wortham Blvd. Houston Texas on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 2:00 pm.
Following the memorial service the Family with the assistance of the American Legion Post 324 would like to hold a reception to honor Joseph Hammons at the American Legion Post 654, located at 3105 Campbell Rd Houston Texas 77080. A police escorted procession will leave the Klein Funeral Home directly following the memorial.
