Joseph A. DeVries, 67, passed away February 4, 2023. Joe was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa. He graduated from Rockford East High School where he excelled in football and wrestling. Joe proudly served his country from 1975 to 1978 as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division.

Shortly after moving to Texas, Joe met and married the love of his life, Donna (aka Schweeter). He was a great dad to their two sons, Kyle and Shane, and was very proud of the men they became.

Joe worked in the printing industry as a journeyman book binder. His fine craftsmanship and love of letterpress printing on antique printing presses was evident in his creations of foil stamping and embossing, wedding invitations, business cards and specialty items. What he loved most was designing and creating notepads for Christmas gifts for his family and friends every year.

Joe had a great sense of humor and an adventurous spirit. He loved being on a sailboat, motor bikes, 4 wheelers, taking road trips, and driving his mail Jeep that he and his sons restored. He always enjoyed his time at the farm in Calvert, his "little piece of Heaven."

Joe was always willing to help anyone who asked. When he saw the need, he made an effort to be a good role model for many young people, encouraging them to do the right thing and to have fun in life. He instilled values without even trying.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Gerald DeVries. Joe is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna, sons Kyle (and Stephanie) and Shane (and Kristina), brothers David, Pete, Jerry and Bill, sisters Ann, Donna, Betty and Laura, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was a great man with a big heart and a friend to many. He was a trickster, teased relentlessly, and had special nicknames for many. The laughter and fun times we shared will never be forgotten. He will be sorely missed and will live forever in our hearts.
