Jose Oscar Mata, devoted family man, faithful Christian, U.S. Army veteran, and hard-working provider, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born on January 11, 1943, in Matamoros, Mexico, Jose grew up in Harlingen, Texas, where he developed the values of faith, service, and dedication that would guide him throughout his life. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1966, serving honorably with pride and integrity.

Mr. Mata was a faithful member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church for 48 years, where his deep Christian faith remained the cornerstone of his life. He also devoted an incredible 50 years of service to the United States Postal Service, providing tirelessly for his family through hard work, commitment, and perseverance.

Jose found great joy in caring for his yard and took pride in making everything around him beautiful. More than anything, he treasured the time spent with his family, especially gathered together for meals, celebrations, and special occasions. Faith and family were always the most important things in his heart.

Mr. Mata was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Maria Portilla Mata; his beloved wife, Eva T. Mata; his brother, Antonio Mata, Jr.; and his sisters, Irma Borrego and Maria Elena Mata.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Elizabeth Escobar; his son, Oscar Mata, Jr. and wife Norma Jean; his brother, Sergio Mata; his sister, Rose Canfora; his cherished grandchildren, Amanda Bonilla, Johnny Bonilla III, Emily Escobar, and Jonathan Edward Ybarra; and his adored great-grandchildren, Aiden, Eva Mae, Isabella, Adriel, and William.

Jose Oscar Mata will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his love for family, his dedication to service, and the kindness and strength he shared with everyone who knew him. His legacy of love, devotion, and hard work will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever
