John Philip Thompson was born in Roswell, New Mexico, on October 10, 1950. He left to be with his Lord and Savior on August 11, 2022.

John grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and was raised in a military family with two siblings. He went to school at Mary Carroll High School, later earning his GED and enlisting in the Army in 1968.  He is blessed to have shared a 60-year friendship with his best friend, Garry Logan. Friendship was something he had until he left this earth, and we are comforted knowing that his friends were also his extended family.

He married his wife, Melinda Thompson, on August 2, 1974, and they embarked on a marriage that would last 13 years spending time at the beach, traveling with friends to the lake, and enjoying each other with family and friends. They remained close and continued to live in the Cypress/Tomball area. We were very fortunate that our parents continued to share a love even though they weren't married.

For 45 years John worked for Mac Haik Ford as a front-end mechanic. Learning his trade and mastering his craft was one of his best qualities. If you were able to work or study under him every day was a lesson. John enjoyed fixing things and loved the challenge and those were traits that were important to him and qualities that made him a great man. He was respected in his field. He was loyal and he was a giving friend.

John was a Veteran, a hunter, and gun marksman. His discipline was sharp, and he spent hours cleaning, refurbishing, and fixing guns. He was truly a man that would not stop until he fixed it. Over the years he earned countless awards for shooting and mastered his skills. He has been a long-time member and served as a board member at Tomball Gun Club.

John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Doris Thompson; and his sister, Janet Viehmann and her husband Richard.

He is survived by his brother, Charles Thompson; daughter and son, Melissa Scott and John Paul Thompson and their spouses, Cody Scott and Heather Dessommes; his former wife, Melinda Thompson; his two granddaughters, Ashley Burckle and Chelsea Bartley and their spouses Chris and Hayden; his two grandsons, Jaks Dessommes-Nutt and Gavin Dessommes-Nutt; and lastly, his new great-granddaughter, Charlotte Anne Burckle. And we also cannot forget his second "daughter" (dog), Elle Mae.

In lieu of flowers, John's family requests that donations be made in his name and memory to PTSD Foundation of America, Boots for Troops, or Camp Hope.
