John Howard Qualls, age 96, passed away on Monday, June 5, 2023. John was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona. He is survived by his sons, John Jr. and his wife Cindy and Paul and his wife Gale; his grandchildren, Maranda Tenorio and Michael Qualls; and seven great-grandchildren.

John was born on April 2, 1927, in Cookeville, Tennessee, to Harvey R. and Sally Mae Qualls. John's mother died when he was two, and his father died when he was thirteen. John was raised by his sister Alma. Alma was 16 years older than John and put her life on hold to help raise him.

John served in the Navy toward the end of World War 2. John loved his country, was proud of his service, and he enjoyed sharing his navy adventures from the Mediterranean Sea.

John married Ramona June Tangert on October 12, 1946. John and Ramona were married for 68 years until her passing in 2015.

After graduating with an associate degree in business from Oakland Community College, John went to work for Holley Carburetor for the next 27 years. While working full-time, John began preaching on the weekends.

At age 52, John left Holley Carburetor to work full-time in ministry as the Education and Bus Minister at the Hazel Park Church of Christ. John moved to Walled Lake, Michigan, three years later to work as the pulpit minister for the next decade. In 1991, John earned a bachelor's degree in religious education from Michigan Christian College. At age 63, John arrived in Houston, Texas, to work as an associate minister at the Church of Christ in Champions. John has been a faithful member of Champions for over 30 years.

John loved the church and the work of a minister. John was a proponent of Christian education and spent many years coordinating and teaching Bible classes and encouraging young people to participate in Bible Bowl. John had a wonderful sense of humor and usually began his Bible classes with a joke. John loved his family, and he loved the Lord. John is an example of a Christian life well lived.

Friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, at the Church of Christ in Champions, 13902 Cutten Road, Houston, TX 77069. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. A committal service with military honors will take place at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
