On January 16, 2026, John William Mahoney, beloved father, grandfather and friend to many, passed away in Tomball, TX at the age of 71. He was born on December 21, 1954, to Benmar and Mary Jane (Allison) Mahoney, in Pittsburgh, PA. They moved to Sedalia, MO around the age of 5 where he then grew up with his 2 brothers.

He graduated from Smith Cotton High School in 1972. He attended Central Missouri State University with a full ride scholarship for Speech and Debate and graduated in 1976 with a B.A, Cum Laude, in Political Science and Economics. He then went on to attend the University of Tulsa, College of law where he graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1979. He became a member of the Missouri Bar in 1979, where he practiced law for a few years in St. Joseph, MO.

John moved to Houston, TX in 1982, and began working at The University of Houston Law Center as an Assistant Director of Training. From 1984-1987, he worked for the Harris County Attorney's Office as the Assistant County Attorney. 1988-2009, John worked at various companies in the Houston area until his job took him to Dallas, TX where he spent 4 years. In 2013, due to declining health, he returned to Cypress, TX, where he maintained his private practice helping people with Estate Planning and Probate. He was happy to have his daughter, Allison, work alongside him as his assistant for many years. In 2025, John officially retired due to Glaucoma taking his eyesight completely.

He also served on the Cypress Independent School District for many years.

John had many passions throughout his life, but music was one of his favorites. He loved to play the organ and piano and sang in his church choir every Sunday. Anyone who knew John, knew he was a big fan of Politics, and had a huge collection of presidential memorabilia.  He was an avid College Basketball fan and loved March Madness. As life slowed down you could find him rooting for his favorite sports teams, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, and the Houston Astros. He also enjoyed every minute spent with his grandkids. His dry sense of humor and cheesy jokes will forever be missed.

He is proceeded in death by his parents and brother, Kent Mahoney.

He is survived by his brother Stephen Mahoney; daughter Allison (Mahoney) Walker and husband Christopher Walker; grandchildren, Peyton, Tinleigh and Tessa; Niece, Kristen Mahoney; great niece Hope and great nephew Emmett.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to The Heights of Tomball nursing home where John spent his last days comfortably and loved by Mr. Joseph and the staff.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the American Heart Association in John's name.

A celebration of John's life and faith will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 23, at Klein Funeral Home – CyFair Northwest,  9719 Wortham Boulevard, Houston, TX 77065. Friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 1 p.m.
