John Edward Buffum Sr., 83, of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on February 10th, 2024.
John was born January 13th, 1941, in Gulfport, Mississippi to the late Edward Bell and Anna Louise (Fentress) Buffum. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Buffum Hammel and husband Tadd Hammel; son, John Edward Buffum Jr. and wife Amy Hungerford Buffum; granddaughter, Jordyn Taylor Hammel; grandsons, Max Hungerford Buffum and Jack Hungerford Buffum; sister, Nona Applegate and her husband Nick; sister-in-law Pam Froehner and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Anne Buffum; wife of 58 years Elizabeth Buffum; sister Peggy Sanders and brother-in-Law Bill Froehner.
John grew up in Mississippi and after college moved to Texas. He met and married Elizabeth in 1963 and they were married until her death in 2021. John started working for Shell Oil in 1964 and retired after 33 years of service. He also started his own Tax Service business in 1969, running it successfully for 44 years.
His hobbies included golf, fishing and bowling. His favorite pastime was playing cards and dominos and one of his passions was cars. He lost count on how many vehicles he had owned in his lifetime. After retirement, that passion turned into a part time job when he became a member of Autotec. John's greatest passion was giving to others. He never asked if or how he could help, he would just show up and start doing whatever was needed. His family and friends will always remember his smile, his laugh and his kind and generous heart. He never met a stranger and would give the shirt off his back for someone in need, which he had done on several occasions. He truly had a Heart as Big as Texas!
