Jerry was born on December 28, 1949 in Lexington, Kentucky to Challis and Eva Ison. He received his Bachelor's degree from Marshall University in Accounting and his Master's in Business Administration from Pepperdine University. Jerry was an executive in the energy sector for over 30 years. He had two sons with his former wife, Cathy and gained three more children when he married Sally in 1990.

Jerry loved following college football, both the Marshall Thundering Herd and the University of Houston Cougars, which four of this children graduated. He loved to watch birds (and sometimes the squirrels) feed from his birdfeeders while sitting in the kitchen.
