Obituary

Sarah Jeannine Hurst, known lovingly as Jeannine and affectionately called Gigi by her grandchildren, passed away peacefully after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was 78, born on January 31, 1947.

Jeannine was born to Gracie Mae Dozier and Red Dozier, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother, David Milton Dozier, Jr., her sister-in-law, Donna Hurst, and her nephew, Tanner Hurst.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 56 years, Jerry Hurst; her daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Barkley Peschel of Sugar Land, and their children Caden, Gracie, and Bella; and her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Renae Hurst of Austin, and their children Weston and Kendal.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and follower of Jesus Christ, Jeannine was a long-time member of Champion Forest Baptist Church, where she and Jerry served faithfully as greeters. Her faith shaped every part of her life, and she lived with a deep love for the Lord and for people.

She once attended nursing school, but her heart was too tender to remain in that field after experiencing the loss of a patient. She also served as a tour guide at the Astrodome—an early glimpse of the warmth and charm she shared with everyone she met.

Jeannine never met a stranger. Her ability to strike up a conversation with anyone—anytime, anywhere—made people feel instantly at ease and genuinely cared for. She had a unique gift for making others feel seen, heard, and loved.

She had a deep love for her family, her church, and her community. She enjoyed walking with friends, serving others through local ministries, and investing in meaningful conversations. She also loved watching sports—especially the Astros, Rockets, and Texans—and if golf or tennis was on TV, she was watching that too.

She will be remembered for her warmth, joy, kindness, and the way she connected with people so naturally and wholeheartedly.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Champion Forest Baptist Church (Champions Campus) in the Chapel, 15555 Stuebner Airline Rd., Houston, TX 77069.

In lieu of flowers, donations—monetary or non-perishable food items—may be made to the food pantry at Champion Forest Baptist Church. For monetary donations, please make checks payable to Champion Forest Baptist Church and write "CMC Memorial–Jeannine Hurst" in the memo line.

On a card she kept on the fridge, Jeannine had written:
"You have my whole heart for my whole life."
That simple sentence says everything about how she lived—with her whole heart, fully given to Jesus, her family, and her friends.
