Obituary

Genevieve "Jean" McCall, age 98, was born in Benton, Illinois on July 7, 1923 to Darrell and Mary Updegraff. Jean passed away peacefully at home in Houston, Texas on January 4, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles Updegraff, daughter Patti McCall, and beloved husband Bill McCall. She is survived by her daughters and sons in law, Mary Beth and Mason Brutschy, Margaret Voorhees, and Kiki and Jeff Carroll. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren and their spouses, Joseph Hanrahan, Carter and Krista Brutschy, Evan Brutschy, Ann and Joe Potente, William and Molly Carroll, and Othello Gibson. Her grandchildren were the light of her life and one of her greatest joys was watching them grow into the people they are today.

After graduating from Kelly High School, Jean went on to obtain her nursing degree from Grant Hospital of Chicago. While working as a nurse, she met the love of her life- Bill McCall. They married on August 19, 1950 and were together 62 wonderful years. Jean and Bill raised four beautiful daughters while living in several states for Bill's career. In 1979, they settled in Houston, Texas to follow their entrepreneurial dreams owning Johnstone Supply of Houston. Jean rolled up her sleeves and worked side by side with Bill to make their business a success.

Jean loved and cared for everyone she met and her door and heart were always open. Her grace and deep faith inspired all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her family, many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends as well as caregivers who were by her side and showed much love and compassion.
