Janet Anne Hammer Rustemier was an identical twin born on Christmas day.  She was born in the small town of St. Joe, Iowa where her parents owned the only grocery store and gas station.  In addition to her identical sister, Janet also had 4 brothers.

Janet met her husband, Paul, while they were both still in high school.  Janet had her eye on college but Paul had his eye on marriage.  He presented her with a ring for her birthday (or Christmas, she wasn't sure which) but she declined and said she wanted to finish college first.  They eventually wed on June 1, 1957.  They were married for over 50 years when Paul passed in 2014.  Together they had 3 children and 3 grandchildren.

Janet was a devout Roman Catholic her entire life.  Her religion and faith were central to her until the very end.  She and Paul made several mission trips to Guatemala and served their church as volunteers.

Education was also important to Janet.  She went to college to become a teacher and later earned a master's degree in education.  She taught elementary school from the age of 20 until she retired at 65.  She loved teaching children but particularly loved teaching them how to read.  If a child was struggling, it was her personal mission to make sure they knew how to read before they left her classroom.

Janet and Paul enjoyed traveling.  Each summer they vacationed with their daughters and camped from the East Coast to the West Coast.  In their retirement they traveled back to Iowa on special trips with their grandchildren, and by themselves internationally through Europe and Africa.  Janet was also known to have a "sweet tooth" and loved a good piece of pie with 2 scoops of ice cream.

Janet is survived by her daughters Pam Rustemier and Julie Miller, their husbands Donavon Smith and Darren Miller, and their children Savannah Smith, Chloe Miller and Dane Miller.  She is also survived by her twin sister Joyce Ripperger and many nieces and nephews.
