J ames Alva Salyers, age 86, of Spring, Texas passed away Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Spring Creek Village under hospice care due to complications of the heart and multiple myeloma.
James was born at home in Spring, Texas to Jimbo and Gertie Mae (Duce) Salyers. As a young boy, he attended Spring Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus as his Savior and was later baptized in Spring Creek. Upon graduation in 1952 from Spring High School, he married Betty Spears, and they had three children. After serving his country in the Air Force from 1953 to 1954, he began a long career as a lab technician for Trinity Portland Cement Company working in building material testing and distribution. Always an avid reader, he favored books about history and the old west. Watching movies, boxing, playing the lottery, shooting pool, and collecting guns were hobbies he enjoyed. He will also be remembered for his use of colorful language and giving advice from his vast life experiences.
James is survived by his three children: Jeanne Beers, Kathy Leggett, and Wesley Salyers and wife, Stacy; his five grandchildren: Lindsey, Taylor, Brittany , Weston, and KC; his four great-grandchildren: Layson, Layken, Hunter, and Karma; his sister-in-law: Dorothy Salyers; his nieces: Susie (Mario) Perez and Laure (Ken) Pegoda and their families; his cousins: Charles John (JoAnn) Johnson and Sandra Johnson Smith and their families; and a special young lady, Olivia Prest, who he trusted to mow his grass.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jimbo Salyers, his mother, Gertie Mae (Duce) Salyers and his brother, John Roy Salyers.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and caretakers for the care given to James during his illness.
