James Gerald Phelan, affectionately known as Jim, was born on August 30, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, to Hugh E. (Ed) and Geraldine Phelan. He was raised on the family farm in Kinsman, Illinois, where he developed a lifelong passion for agriculture, the outdoors, rural life, and hard work.

An entrepreneur at heart, Jim was never one to shy away from hard work or the next big adventure. He began his career on the family farm before spending a brief time in coal mining and later building a successful career in agricultural and commercial construction. His determination, vision, and willingness to take on any challenge became the foundation of a life well lived.

Texas had always called to him. For several years, Jim split his time between Illinois and the place he dreamed of calling home, embracing every opportunity to live out his dream of being a Texas cowboy. In 1981, he made Waller, Texas, his permanent home. There, he established a thriving construction business that he proudly operated for the next 45 years. Along the way, he built not only businesses but lasting friendships and a sterling reputation. He was respected throughout his community for his integrity, kindness, and extraordinary generosity.

Jim found his greatest joy outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, working cattle, riding horses, or simply sitting around a campfire, he was happiest surrounded by the people he loved. A campfire was often the setting for his unforgettable stories about "this old boy and that old boy," told with the humor and charm that made everyone feel like family and the ordinary, extraordinary.

Above all else, Jim loved people. He treasured time with his wife, his daughters, his grandchildren, his large extended family, and his many friends. His door was always open, everyone was welcome, and anyone he met could find a place at his table. One of Jim's greatest gifts was his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He had a way of finding common ground with everyone he met. He listened as much as he talked, was genuinely interested in the world around him, and embraced every opportunity to experience it. His warmth, hospitality, and sincere curiosity left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Geraldine Phelan; his father, Hugh Edward (Ed) Phelan; his stepmother, Lucille Phelan; his sister, Joan; Matthew Phelan (infant son); and Katherine Phelan (infant daughter).

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sudie(Gutek); his devoted daughters, Gerrie (Ryan), Bridgette (Alan), and Shannon (Bradley); his cherished grandchildren, Everett, Teddy, Millie, and Hayes; his honorary son, Rylan Holub (Kaitlyn); his stepchildren, Shawn, Brooke, Amber, and Sloan; seven step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; his brothers, Kevin Phelan and Tim (Karen) Phelan; his sisters, Anita Robinson, Janet (Bill) Phelan, Jean (Ed) Condon, Peggy (Tom) Jordan, Mary (Don) Pfeifer, Jane (Al) Hinchman, Patty (Ron) Mueller and Betty (Rob) Miller; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Jim's larger-than-life personality, unwavering generosity, entertaining stories, and adventurous spirit will be remembered by all who knew him. To his family, he was their rock, their greatest example, and the man against whom all others will be measured. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the family he loved so deeply, and the memories that will forever be shared around campfires for generations to come.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Friday, July 24, at Klein Funeral Home in Tomball, Texas. Visitation, open to all who knew and loved Jim, will take place from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.

To celebrate the cowboy Jim was, we invite everyone to wear denim-on-denim or Western chic attire.

Family and friends are invited to continue celebrating Jim's life immediately following the service with a luncheon at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hempstead, Texas.

A private family burial of Jim's ashes will be held the following day.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Waller County Fair in support of the 100 Club. Checks should be made payable to the Waller County Fair, with "100 Club – Jim Phelan" in the memo line, and mailed to P.O. Box 911, Hempstead, TX 77445.

Jim believed in supporting local farmers and preserving the agricultural traditions he loved. In his memory, please consider shopping locally, supporting family farms, and helping ensure those traditions continue for future generations.
