Obituary

James Oliver Ogletree, 83, of Spring went to be with the Lord on January 12, 2021. Just a few months after his passing, on May 1, 2021, he was joined by his wife of 62 years Shirley Ann Barnhill Ogletree, who was 81.

Jim was born August 10, 1937 to the late Oliver Jesse Ogletree and James Hilda Palmer Ogletree. Shirley was born on December 25, 1939 to the late William Everett Barnhill and Annie Lee Cotton Barnhill. Jim and Shirley had four children: James Alan Ogletree, Thomas Melvin Ogletree, Kay Jeannine Ogletree, and Amy Susanne Ogletree.

Jim and Shirley were married on August 24, 1958 in Pearl, Mississippi. They are preceded in death by their parents, and by their son Alan Ogletree. They are survived by Alan's wife Sara Elizabeth Crosland Ogletree, Tom and his wife Lela Kate Swart Ogletree, Kay Rivera, and Amy and her husband Jesse Kirkegaard, along with 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Jim graduated from Mississippi State University in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Throughout his 40-year professional career, the family lived in Baytown, Lafayette, New Orleans, and Houston. The final family move was in June 1977 to Spring, Texas.

The Ogletrees joined Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, where Jim and Shirley were both very involved. They chaperoned many mission trips with the student ministry and were famous for their breakfast feasts. In addition to being a deacon, Jim taught a middle school boys Sunday School class. Shirley taught Sunday School and VBS to young children and worked in the puppet ministry.

In later years, Jim and Shirley participated in Bible Study Fellowship, where Jim was a Discussion Leader. Jim's interests included genealogy, fantasy football, the Houston Astros, and Blue Bell ice cream. Shirley was an expert cook and homemaker, and enjoyed cross-stitching, reading, and helping others. Both gave abundantly of their time and their wisdom.

I am the way and the truth and the life.

No one comes to the Father except through me.
