James Hover Hatheway, Jr., passed away peacefully Sunday, October 16, 2022, at home after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He is survived by wife of 68 years, Margaret, twin daughters Susan Barbaro and Mary Ellen Richards, son-in-law Peter Barbaro, six grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, brother John David Hatheway, sisters-in-law Kathleen Hatheway and Lucille Vogler, four nieces, and their families. He is preceded in death by parents James Hover and Ellen Mary Hatheway, father- and mother-in-law George and Margaret Mary Vogler, and brother-in-law John Vogler.

Raised in upstate New York, Jim met Margaret Vogler in a state teacher's college in New Paltz. His studies were interrupted by his service in the Air Force in Germany during the Korean conflict. Upon his return, they married and moved to Huntington Station, New York, living next door to Margaret's dad. Work moved them around to Connecticut and eventually back to Long Island. Children and grandchildren arrived but moved away.

Taking early retirement from work as lead chemist for Estée Lauder, Jim pursued several interests and hobbies, including woodworking, model railroading (complete with national archive buildings to scale), model sailboat construction and racing, and reading nonfiction (e.g., military and sports history, religion, and archaeology). Talented at repairs around the house, Jim also built a Victorian doll house for Margaret, cigar box guitars for friends, and a nine-hole putt-putt course in his garage. Eventually, Jim and Margaret followed the kids and grandkids to Houston where Jim served several years as president of the neighborhood homeowners' association.

A child of the Great Depression, when any pleasures had to be simple (e.g., playing ball all day, soap box derbies), Jim never lost that youthful spirit of good-natured fun. An astute instigator of schoolroom pranks (a charter member of "The Pear Chuckers Club"), Jim also was a keen observer of workplace foibles─he once ordered a green phone for his lab. Until his last illness, Jim enjoyed all sports and games (biking, skating, tennis, golf, pool, bean bag, wiffle ball, pickleball, pinochle, chess, etc.) and watching local NFL teams lose.

Patient, generous, easygoing, prayerful, a true homebody whose favorite activity was celebrating with the family. Jim was a night owl who surely knew how to nap during the day. Grandson Michael Richards called him "the quintessential grandfather."  Oldest grandchild Sandra Ostrowski said, "… Pop-Pop embraced childhood joy and recommended never venturing much past the mental age of twelve … you understand the world a bit but don't take life too seriously."  We miss you Jim, but we'll catch up.
