In Loving Memory of James Gilmer

James Gilmer, a devoted Husband and Father, an extraordinary percussionist, and beloved member of Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, passed away at his home on Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at the age of 70. His remarkable talent, captivating stage presence, and warm spirit left an indelible mark on the world of music and on the lives of all who knew him.

Born to Alma Darline Gilmer and Joyce Lorraine Gilmer on May 22, 1954 in Houston, Texas, James discovered his passion for music early in life. A natural rhythm maker, he cultivated his skills and became a sought-after percussionist, known for his versatility and ability to infuse any performance with depth and energy.

For decades, James was a vital part of Lyle Lovett's celebrated ensemble, contributing his unique sound and heartfelt harmonies to their genre-defying music. Whether on tour or in the studio, he brought joy and dedication to his craft, helping to create moments that will live on in the hearts of fans worldwide.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, James was cherished for his kindness, humor, and unwavering generosity. He had an innate ability to connect with people, making everyone feel like an old friend.

James was preceded in death by his brother Terry Lee Gilmer Sr. and is survived by his wife of 50 years Lisa Carol Gilmer, three daughters Dawn Suzanne Gilmer, Cynthia Darline Whittington, and Twila Dianne Ybarra, and siblings Jerry Lynn Gilmer, David Louis Gilmer, Sheryl Joyce Vasek, grandchildren Morgan Elizabeth, Kennedy Paige, Sebastian Lee, Cohen James, Aiden Cooper, Jordan Kale and Kylan Bradley, Great Grandchildren Samson James and Micah Renee, numerous friends, and fans who will miss his light but carry forward his legacy through the music and memories he leaves behind.

Viewings will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 for the family from 4PM-5PM and will open to the public from 5PM-8PM at Klein Funeral Home, located at 1400 W Main St., Tomball, TX 77375.

A celebration of James Gilmer's life and music will follow on Thursday, December 5 at 10AM at First Baptist Church Tomball, located at 401 Oxford St., Tomball, TX 77375.
