James Ryon Degenhardt's Obituary
James Ryon Degenhardt, born on April 21, 1980, in Austin, TX, departed this world on October 5, 2018, after a hard-fought nearly three-year battle with cancer. Raised in Liberty Hill, TX, and a graduate of Texas State University, Ryon impacted many lives in his short 38 years. He was a loving husband to Michelle for almost 10 years and a committed, loving father to Ashlyn (6) and Caleb (4).
Ryon enjoyed many activities with his family including swimming, pushing Ashlyn and Caleb on the swings, chasing them on the playground, bug catching, fishing, reading books, traveling, playing games, taking care of their fish tank, watching Ashlyn dance, teaching them basketball skills, attending their YMCA basketball games, and watching movies together. Ashlyn describes Ryon as "the best dad anyone could ever have."
Ryon's passion for teaching and coaching was evident as he served as a mentor and role model for the students at Klein Intermediate. Ryon loved coaching and his competitive side was evident as he coached both eighth grade basketball and football. Ryon pushed himself to the limits, even following surgeries and chemo, because he wanted to make a positive impact on each of his students' lives. Ryon modeled dedication, perseverance through trials, and always wanted to be there for "his kids" that he coached.
Ryon is survived by his wife, Michelle; his children, Ashlyn and Caleb; his father and stepmother, Carlton and Marilyn Degenhardt; his mother, Pam Mynard; his brother, Charlie Degenhardt; his half-sister, Jacque Frame; his grandmother, Jacqueline Mynard; his Oma, Doris Degenhardt; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Bonita Pierce; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his Opa, Alton Degenhardt; and his grandpa, Charles Mynard.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 14, at Salem Lutheran Church, 22601 Lutheran Church Road, Tomball, TX 77377. Friends are welcome to visit with the family beginning at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Salem Lutheran School, Klein Intermediate Athletic Program, or Team Degenhardt Scholarship Fund. Checks for Team Degenhardt should be made payable to "Salem Lutheran School" with "Team Degenhardt" noted on the memo line. These schools have strongly impacted Ryon over the past several years as well as the lives of his children.
