James Callahan Forbes, 30, of Tomball, Texas died on August 8th, 2025 surrounded by those who cherished him most. "Cal" Forbes is survived by his parents James and Candace, his sisters Anna and Bailey, his brother in-law Jarett Johnson, his sister in-law Katie Mulkay, and his grandparents Bettye and Richard.
Cal had a voracious love for reading, which manifested both in his personal hobbies and academic career. While studying for his Master's in Library Science (which he later earned), Cal proudly self-published his first novel at just 22 years old. He wholeheartedly advocated for reading in any capacity, recently remarking, "Whether it's novels, subtitles, or the sports section of the newspaper, whatever it is…just read." Cal would likely even be begrudgingly pleased to know that you are reading his obituary, since it means that you are, in fact, reading something.
Additionally, he was an avid comic book collector, reader, and enjoyer—but he also maintained an impressive and vast repository of knowledge across many different forms of media. Leveraging this knowledge, he developed an uncanny knack for finding a common interest in conversation with anyone.
All said, Cal's life was far too rich to be wholly captured in only a few short paragraphs; he was uniquely himself, always and unapologetically. His friends and family loved him immensely for it.
A memorial service will be held at Chapel in the Woods at Woodlands Church on Thursday, August 14th at 10 am. Superhero/band merch/graphic tee attire preferred but not required. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) or read any of his publications found on Amazon: Lucien's Fury (2017), The Low Tree Up On the High Hill & other Stories (2018), and October 26th (2019). If you'd like to honor his memory, drink a Pepsi, make a bad pun, listen to Queen, or learn a new presidential fun fact.
