Jackson Barkley Smith III
May 3, 1951 - September 18, 2016
Barkley Smith, 65, of Cypress, Texas, passed away Sunday morning, September 18, 2016, following a struggle with cancer and related complications.
The son of Honorable Jack and Myrtle Smith was born and raised in Houston, Texas, before enlisting in the United States Navy. Upon discharge, he returned home and began his diversified career that included many years at Harris County after which he pursued a 'calling' for several years at the Star of Hope Mission. Since his retirement, Barkley's primary interests included numerous car restoration projects and related travels. He and his wife, Debbie, just recently celebrated 28 years of marriage on September 1. They had two children, Alan Wayne Smith and Valerie Anne Smith, with whom he shared many interests including cars, cattle, recreational shooting, and football, as well as a love for all things Texas. Being members of Windwood Presbyterian Church of 21 years, Barkley enjoyed his time with the "Miller Lights" small group Bible study. Members of the group were his biggest supporters on this journey along with family and friends and Barkley looked forward to visits from them each and every day.
Barkley is preceded in death by his father, Honorable Judge Jack Smith, all grandparents, and his cousin, Raymond Stevens. Survivors include his wife, Debra Kaye Smith; his mother ,Jesse Myrtle Smith, children Jackson Barkley (Bart) Smith IV and wife Isabel, Alan Wayne Smith, Valerie Anne Smith; siblings, Louis Smith and wife Deborah, Stephanie Gilmore and husband Bill, and Kevin Smith and wife Kathryn. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and his dog, Jethro.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, at Klein Funeral Home - CyFair Northwest, 9719 Wortham Boulevard, Houston, TX 77065. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 22, in the funeral home chapel.
Pallbearers will be John Rudinger, John Jackson, Mike Pertl, Paul Rocha, and nephews Philip and Jack Washington.
Interment will be private.
