Ida Jean Comprini
March 30, 1922 – December 4, 2024

With a heart full of love and gratitude, Ida Jean Comprini, 102, peacefully entered eternal life on December 4, 2024, at her home in Tomball, Texas.

Born on March 30, 1922, in Eynon, Pennsylvania, Ida was the oldest of five children of Enrico (Rigo) and Natalina (Lena) Caldara. From her humble upbringing in an Italian American immigrant family, surrounded by laughter, Ida learned the values of hard work, generosity, and compassion. Her life was a testament to kindness, love, and a deep, abiding faith. She began each day with a prayer of gratitude, a good attitude, and a strong cup of coffee.

Ida had an inner strength, inherited from her mother and especially from her grandmother, Maria, who endured the long and difficult journey by ship to America with three small children. Ida herself faced incredible challenges, surviving West Nile Virus in her 80s, and hip surgery at 96. Her resilience and tenacity were a source of inspiration to all who knew her.

Ida's love for learning and reading was one of her most defining traits. Her success as an excellent speller on the locally broadcast radio spelling bees made her known throughout the valley. She was valedictorian of her 1940 Archbald High School class and attended Powell School of Business. After moving with her sister Inez to Connecticut to look for work, she got a job as an accountant at The Torrington Company during World War II, earning certifications at the busy wartime ball-bearing factory. From her childhood days of reading at the dinner table to her passion for reading and excelling at word and card games, even in her last years, Ida served as a continual inspiration to the younger generations of her family to never stop reading and learning.

Ida inherited her giving spirit from her mother, Lena, whose sense of humor and cooking was loved by all. After high school, Ida volunteered to sign up neighborhood recruits for the war. In later life, whether ironing church linens, cooking for the priests, serving as a room mother or scout leader for her children, or volunteering with the Homemakers Group or Assistance League for the community, Ida was known for her willingness to serve others.

Ida met her husband, Othello "Tello" Comprini, at his sendoff party the night before his WWII deployment. After a courtship with his daily letters from the war front, they were married in 1946. She embraced the life of a military officer's wife, good-naturedly moving with their children from base to base, always remembering the unique adventures and the wonderful friends they made. They went from the freezing climate of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska to the desert heat of Yuma, Arizona, where she and Tello stayed and made their home for many years after his retirement from the Army. Together they made cross-country trips, enjoyed international travel to New Zealand and Europe, and regularly visited family in Hawaii. Some of Ida's fondest memories were of the family beach vacations she and Tello arranged in San Diego.  After 42 years of marriage and Tello's passing, Ida moved to Sun Lakes, Arizona, where she could walk to church or gather with her friends for cards, clubhouse events, or bus trips. She enjoyed visits from family, often for holidays. Embracing her love of travel, she took frequent trips to Hawaii and a special tour all around Italy.

Ida, fondly known also as Nonni, was always there to celebrate events in the lives of her grandchildren. They admired her for loving without judgment and never speaking badly of others. She was fortunate to also get to know her five great-grandchildren.

Ida is preceded in death by her parents, Rigo and Lena Caldara; her husband, Othello "Tello"; her brother, Hugo; her sister, Inez; and her infant son, Peter Dominic Comprini.

Ida is survived by two sisters, Irma of Glastonbury, CT, and Rita of Litchfield, CT; son Gary (Lee) of Greer, South Carolina; daughter Joyce (Bill) of Kaneohe, Hawaii; and daughter Jean (Mark) of Tomball, Texas. She was a proud Grandma to Lisa (Stephen) of Simpsonville, South Carolina; Kim (Brandon) of Muscatine, Iowa; Christopher of Kailua, Hawaii; Angela (Arnaud) of Park City, Utah; Aaron of Houston, Texas; and Faith of Tomball, Texas. She was also a proud great-grandmother (Nonni) to Preston and Aiden, Joshua and Emily, and Nash.

Ida's legacy is one of love, strength, generosity, a deep abiding faith, and family. Her unwavering optimism, her joy in the simple things, and her devotion to those she loved will be carried forward by all who knew her. As she often said, "Arrivederci. Until we meet again."

A memorial mass and blessing of ashes will be held at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 1111 S. Cherry St., Tomball, TX 77375 on December 13, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.

A second memorial mass will be held at a later date in Yuma, AZ, with interment at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, where Ida's remains will be buried alongside her husband Tello.
