Hilda Doerre, age 97 passed peacefully Wednesday May, 13th at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born Hilda Elfrieda Wunderlich on June 25th, 1922 at her home in Klein Texas to William and Katherine Strack Wunderlich. She attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated Valedictorian from Klein High school in 1940. Hilda married Leonard L. Doerre August 24th, 1941 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Klein Texas. She worked for her father-in-law, H. E. Doerre in his cafeteria established for Klein school. Later she, her husband, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law opened and ran Doerre Brothers' Grocery Store until early 1970s. During this time they welcomed four children, Geraldine, Herby, Susan, and Rex. Hilda retired to be a homemaker, and mom. Soon she became the caretaker for many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends.

What Hilda loved and cherished most was her faith in God and her family. Hilda's home was a place that her family loved to gather for every occasion to eat, play cards, and play in her yard sheltered by giant Oak Trees. She made rolls, chicken and dumplings, and cinnamon rolls from scratch that compared to none. There was no recipe book. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren spent countless hours with her playing dominos, baking cookies, hunting, gardening, and most importantly, learning how to care for others. Hilda's love for gardening produced beautiful gardenias, roses, and azaleas. She sewed countless dresses, costumes, and mended clothing for her family. When her grandchildren were young, they teased her about talking to herself. We all laughed when she would respond with 'Because I like to talk to a smart person and hear a smart person talk!'

Hilda also had a passion for learning. Her Encyclopedia Britannica was well worn, and she took the best notes from Ann Landers. She also believed in staying healthy. Hilda and her brother James would visit their gym at the church 3 times a week through her 90's. They would start their morning with a cup of coffee, followed by a diligent work out with their friends. Hilda provided a daily example of how to live a life that honored her Heavenly Father and her German Heritage. She held her great-grandchildren on her hip when she was 90, she swept her own floors at 97, and she attended church weekly, for as long as she could. Hilda was the Matriarch of our family that would enrich us with the history of every detail of how the Wunderlich Family, the Doerre Family, and the Klein Community emerged.

Hilda never spent a minute without a family member or loved one in her home, while she was ill. As we mourn the woman who has been our everything, we rejoice that she is reuniting, and surely dancing in heaven with her parents, husband, son, siblings, and many loved ones that have preceded her to meet our Father.

Hilda has been preceded in death by, her parents, eleven siblings, husband of fifty-five years, Leonard, granddaughter Robin, and her son Rex.

She is survived by her brother James Wunderlich, children, Geraldine Harmeier (Dale), Herby Doerre (Cindy), Susan Holzworth (Larry), daughter-in-law Patricia Doerre, eleven grandchildren, Rodney, Bradley, Macey, Nicole, Jennifer, Terri, Ryan, Dana, Justin, Jared, and Randal, and thirteen great grandchildren and twins on the way.
