Herman Charles Schertle, Jr. passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at age 70, from complications from a broken hip he sustained in a dog-sledding accident while on vacation in Alaska in March 2025.

Herman was born September 16, 1954, in Parkville, MD and attended Parkville High, where he played lacrosse and football. He played trumpet in the high school band as well as in two performing bands which began his life-long love of music. He was an excellent student and attended college at Texas Lutheran College, where he earned a BA in History, and Nova University, where he earned a Master's in Childcare Administration.

Herman met his wife of 49 years, Jakki Weiland, at TLC. They married on June 19, 1976. Instead of Herman attending law school as they had planned, Herman and Jakki took a job as House Parents for teenage boys on juvenile probation in 1976 in San Antonio. This began the couple's lifelong work helping children, teens, and families heal from abuse. In 1977, they moved to Houston to work at Houston Achievement Place, where they worked together for almost 40 years. During his time there, Herman impacted the lives of many as a live-in Teaching-Parent (with Jakki), Assistant Program Manager, Consultant, Trainer, Evaluator, and Case Manager.

Herman and Jakki had two daughters, Jillian and Alyssa, who he loved dearly. He was so proud of the fine young women they became. He adored his grandson, Decklyn, and liked nothing more than building castles out of cardboard boxes with him, reading to him, and going to the park with him.

Herman loved his extended family and all his friends, from the lifelong ones from Parkville to members of every group he was involved with.

Herman had many varied interests. He enjoyed traveling, studying history, doing genealogical research, studying the Bible, playing games, and singing, his favorite way to worship and praise God.

Above all, Herman loved the Lord. He openly shared his faith with people everywhere he went, wanting everyone to have the close relationship with God that he felt.

Herman left us too soon. He will be sorely missed. He leaves behind a legacy of the many lives he touched, each the stronger for knowing him.

Herman was predeceased by his parents, Herman Charles Schertle, Sr. and Margaret (Zeller) Schertle, and his sister, Mary Ellen (Schertle) Lazowsky.

Herman is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Jaclyn (Jakki) Schertle, daughters, Jillian Schertle and partner Carlos Martinez, Alyssa Lewis and husband Jeff, and beloved grandson Decklyn Maximus Schertle Martinez; nephew Lee Tomlinson and his family; niece Denise Baker and her family; brother- and sister-in-law Bob and Cindy Weiland and their family. He leaves behind many friends who will miss him dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Timothy Lutheran Church or Samaritan's Purse in memory of Herman.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 26, at Klein Funeral Home - CyFair Northwest, 9719 Wortham Blvd., Houston, TX 77065. A funeral service celebrating Herman's life and faith will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 14225 Hargrave Rd., Houston, TX 77070. Interment will follow at Klein Memorial Park in Pinehurst.
