Reverend Herbert R Rohloff Jr., passed away at his home, on January 13, 2017, at the age of 85. Herb was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 7, 1931. He moved to Houston with his family at the age of 3, growing up in the Rice Village area and attending Lamar HS.

Herb's passion was the Church, and sharing the gospel. He grew up in the Methodist Church, where his father was the organist at First Methodist Church of Houston, and his mother was involved in youth ministry. After serving 3 years in the Army, Herb attended SMU in Dallas, graduating with a Masters in Divinity. Upon ordination, he served numerous churches in Tyler, Willis, Houston, Texarkana, Beaumont, and finished with 2 years in the Derbyshire district of England. He was particularly fond of John Wesley UMC, where he was the founding pastor, and served the longest. It was here that they returned, when he and Pat retired. Regardless of the location, he loved the church and the people.  He strived to make a difference, where ever he served.  And in each of these locations, they made lasting friendships, which they maintained, long after leaving.

Herb loved his family. In particular, he was devoted to his wife of almost 60 years, Pat. They were married in 1955, and raised two sons, Herb and Greg. For the first 50 years of his marriage, Herb never demonstrated an ability to cook, clean, or do laundry. However, after retirement, as Pat's health failed, Herb tackled these tasks with gusto, though with a "learning curve". As her health continued to decline, he rarely left her side until her death in 2015. He was also a devoted grandfather, who was very possessive of "his" grandchildren. As they became adults and scattered across the country, he always checked the daily weather for each of their locations, in case he needed to call them with advice on road conditions or the importance of jackets and umbrellas.

Herb was never bashful and loved an audience . He particularly enjoyed telling stories and jokes. Stories were a part of every Sunday's sermon. He seemed to know a story or joke for almost any occasion, and was never reluctant to share them. He particularly delighted in the smiles and occasional "groans" they generated. It was from one of those groaning jokes that he became "Dooda" to all of his grandchildren, a name he wore with pride.

Herb enjoyed golf, fishing, and travel with friends. These were his escapes, when he needed them.   He was never a morning person, except on those mornings when he was going fishing. And on most Thursdays, he could be found on the golf course with friends. The many vacation trips to England with friends, eventually led to his decision to move there with Pat, for the final 2 years of his ministry. His days in Derbyshire were quite memorable to both Herb and Pat and to the many friends they developed while there. Wearing his black robe, black cowboy boots and in the wintery outdoor events his white Stetson hat that depicted him as the Tall Texan. One Derbyshire friend recently wrote "With their exotic (to us!) accents and wonderful charm, and with your statuesque Dad in his big hat, it really felt like Hollywood had come to a small sleepy Derbyshire village!"

Herb was an outgoing individual, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Herb is preceded in death by his wife Pat, his parents Herb and Bernice Rohloff, and his sisters Esther Herschler and Cecil Tarver. He is survived by his son Herb and his wife Karen; son Greg and his wife Amanda; grandson Chris and wife Maria, grandson Colton and wife Diane, granddaughter Katelyn, grandson Calaway, granddaughter Kathryn, granddaughter Nicole and her husband Matt; great-granddaughter Ava; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be a memorial service held at John Wesley United Methodist Church, at 2:00 PM, Friday February 3, 2017.
