Obituary

Harriett Sims Morris was born in Chester, South Carolina on May 18, 1941. She passed on February 3, 2024, at age 82, at her home, in Spring, Texas. Harriett was the first daughter of Anne Carroll Sims and Claude Morrison Sims.

Harriett lost her beloved husband, Thomas Lee Morris, in October, after 65 years of marriage. She leaves behind her children Katherine Boeckman, Melinda Larkin, and Thomas (Butch) Morris, Jr., and her much- loved chocolate lab, Coco. Harriett is also survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and by her younger siblings Julia Sims Massingill, Susan Sims Orr, and Claude Morrison Sims, Jr.

In the 60s and early 70s, Harriett worked for the Houston Legal Foundation while also attending night school at the University of Houston. Her resolute work ethic was unmatchable. When the family moved from Houston to Spring, in the late 70s, Harriett worked as a bookkeeper for Curtis Hankamer Corporation and Wild Well Control. Later that same decade, she partnered with Tom and his father, Leo, to establish Morris Sand and Gravel.

Harriett valued education and culture. As a lifelong learner, she studied a wide range of subjects from Accounting to Viking History. Her favorite subject was French. Occasionally, in midlife, Harriett jetted off to France for a Summer student exchange program to practice her language skills. When her girls and her brother Claude were young, she exposed them to museum exhibitions, theatre, and the opera. For her son, she proudly attended every athletic event and encouraged him to play the violin. Harriett loved collecting all things French and anything that sparkled. But more than anything, she loved taking care of her dog.

While she may have been diminutive in stature, those who knew Harriett can attest to her giant spirit. She insisted on no funeral but, this Summer, family and friends will come together to reflect on and celebrate her life. At night, when we who love her see a falling star, we know Harriett's spirit has hitched a ride.
