GLENDA RUTH DERNICK (1924-2016)
On Monday, August 1, Glenda passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was born on Oct 8, 1924 in Claremore, OK to V.I. And Dorothy Fowler. She was the younger sister of Robert, who passed away during WWII while serving in the US Navy.
Glenda spent her youth in Oklahoma, Missouri and Michigan and after graduating from high school she returned to Oklahoma where she worked for an oil and gas company. It was there, on a blind date, that she met the love of her life, Harry. (It was much later that Harry admitted he was surprised when he met her. He had been expecting a blonde that worked in the same office.) Harry and his "Pigeon" eloped to Las Vegas on June 2, 1953.
Harry's work as an engineer in the oil and gas business took them first to Tulsa, where her first two sons, Steve and Bob, were born. Next, they moved to Denver, where her third son Dave was born. They moved to Calgary in 1961 where Glenda forged many life-long friendships. Glenda and Harry moved to Houston in 1974, where within three years, her three "chickens" had settled in the Houston area, too.
Glenda's entire life was centered around her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her interests included golf, reading and her soaps. She was a gourmet cook who loved to entertain both friends and family.. She enjoyed a good joke, a dry martini and sparkly things in blue boxes. Glenda had a strong personality; anyone who met her wasn't apt to forget her.
Glenda was predeceased by her beloved Harry in 1998 and her grandson, Clayton in 2010.
She is survived by her three sons, Steve (Judy) and Dave (Lisa) of Houston, and Dr. Bob (Chris) of The Woodlands. Mourning her passing are her grandchildren: Lisa (Rex), Danny (Joy), Lizann (Ray), Laurie (Chris), Matt (Ashley), Tommy (Vero), Cameron, Caroline, and Max Buck (Leighann). Glenda was G.G. to her precious great grandchildren: Rawson, Camden, Elle, and Savanna Hardy; James Dernick; Liam and Sammy Bearrow, and Huey Dernick. She will be missed by the many friends she made in Calgary and the Champions area, too.
Glenda's family would like to thank her friends and neighbors for their kindness and concern, especially during her illness. Knowing that people cared was a great comfort to her.
According to Glenda's wishes, she was cremated and there will be no service. A reception in her honor will be held at a later date.
