Glen Short was born to Ray and Gwen Short on June 3rd1928 in Omaha, Nebraska. The family moved to Phoenix Arizona when he was twelve. His parents, brother, David and sister, Jean moved to California when he was sixteen but Glen remained in Phoenix living with family friends. He was his high school class president his senior year and drum major in the marching band.

After graduation Glen and three friends joined the United States Air Force. He served for four years, primarily playing in the Air Force band and again leading the parade as drum major for the marching band.Upon his discharge he returned to Phoenix and married Florence Preston. They moved to Berkeley, California where Glen attended the University of California Berkeley and obtained his BS in

Chemistry. While in Berkeley their daughter Kathleen was born. In 1954 they moved to Salt Lake City Utah where Glen started work on his PHD in Chemistry. He worked three jobs putting himself through school as a postman, a janitor and a bus driver. Finally completing his doctorate in 1956.

He and Florence then moved back to California , moving to Walnut Creek and Glen began his long career with Shell Chemical Co. He specialized in plastics research in Emoryville. In 1957 his son Kendell was born and the family moved into their first home in Concord California. While in Concord his third child Bradley was born in 1960.

Living so close to San Francisco he developed a lifelong love for Japanese design. He studied the art of Bonsai and raised many Bonsai trees over his lifetime.

His work with Shell took him to Cherry Hill, NJ. In 1966. His sons were very active in swim team and Glen and Florence spent many Saturday mornings cheering them on. The rest of the summers were spent exploring the east coast, camping and traveling through the many historic site and cities. Glen's love for music and parades made the Philadelphia Mummer Parade an annual event.

In 1973 Glen and Florence move to Houston, TX. He was still with Shell, both the downtown location and later at Westhollow. They lived in the Norchester neighborhood for 17 years and enjoyed lots of friends and neighbors. He was a regular on the tennis courts every Saturday morning.

In 1990, they moved to Champions. Glen retired and took up his new passion, golf. He joined the Romeos golf group and made many great friends. Sadly Florence passed away in 1992. But Glen met his new love and a year later he and Dorothy were married. This doubled our family bringing in Dorothy's son Bryce, his wife Robin, her son Ricky and his wife Trudy and her son Rex. Dorothy's sisters Lee and Sue were also welcome additions to the family.

Glen's work with Shell took him to many corners of the world including The Hague, Moscow, Rome, Korea and Japan. But after he retired and married Dorothy they were really bitten by the travel bug and together they spent many happy years filled with special trips and experiences. Their shared enjoyment of golf and football made for lots of weekend fun, though Dorothy was surprised to find that her even- keeled husband could really explode over a televised football game.

Glen Short was a man of many interests and talents. He had a lifelong love for music. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, listening to the Big Band sound, he played the sousaphone and the baritone and later after he retired he took up the bagpipes. Sadly, in is later years, his growing deafness robbed him of this musical pleasure.

But undaunted he continued his interest in Bonsai, gardening, his elaborate mask collection and much to the delight of his family, cooking. Many an enjoyable meal was served at his table. His signature Christmas dinner of Beef Tenderloin with Madeira sauce was a particular favorite.

Glen was a loving father and husband. He loved his grandchildren, their spouses and more recently his great grand children. They brought him a great deal of pleasure.

He was a man of strong intellect, avid curiosity and had a delightfully dry sense of humor. He treated all that he met with genuine respect. And as was told to me recently "He was the kindest man I've ever known" Glen was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and he will be deeply missed.
