Georgette Ann Popeney

Georgette Ann Popeney went home to the Lord on August 24, 2026, three days shy of her 99th birthday. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren in loving prayer. Born on August 27, 1927, in Bristow, Oklahoma to Kareem and Kathbe Shibley, Georgette had a twin brother, George, and five siblings.

The family moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania, in the early 1940s, where Georgette attended Central High School. Upon graduation, she worked as a medical technician and later as a key punch operator for IBM, where she met Charles Popeney, whom she married in 1961. The couple lived in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Endicott, New York. In 1971, IBM transferred the family to Houston where they bought a home in Ponderosa Forest and raised their four children.

Georgette was a devout Catholic who attended daily Mass at Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Church and was a parishioner at St. Edward’s for many years prior. She served as a Eucharistic Minister for more than 20 years, bringing community and communion to those in the hospital unable to make it to Mass. Georgette loved spending time with her family and her countless friends, never missing an opportunity to stay up late, filling the room with her laughter. Her birthday was her favorite time of the year, and she always enjoyed a prolonged celebration that would last months after the date itself. She loved a multi-hour meal with family and friends where laughter and joy filled the room. Over the 50 years she lived in Houston, she invested daily in building a beautiful community, participating in the Ponderosa Garden Club, bunco, and aerobics at the YMCA well into her 90s.

Georgette was a selfless mother and a devoted grandmother, preceded in death by her husband, Charles, and is survived by four children: Ellen Slater and her husband Rob, Chuck Popeney and his wife Faye, Julie Sullivan, and Karen Cahill and her husband Mark, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 28, from 5-8 pm, with a vigil service at 6:30 pm at Klein Funeral Home, 16131 Champions Forest Dr., Spring. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, August 29 at 3 pm. at Christ the Good Shepherd Church, 18511 Klein Church Rd, Spring, followed by burial at Klein Memorial Park 9714 FM 2920, Tomball.
