George Edwin Messick, 94, of Houston died on Saturday, August 20, 2016. He was born in Whatcheer, Iowa to Laura and Leroy Messick. He was preceded in death by his brother Donald Messick. George worked in retail for J.J. Newberry Company for 30 years, followed by 10 years with Cloth World. He was a decorated World War II Army veteran who served bravely and honorably in the European theater.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years Laura Moffitt Messick from Newton, Iowa. He met Laura at Newton High School and they married in 1942 before he left for service in World War II. They moved throughout the mid-west during their marriage and finally retired in Leesburg, Florida, eventually relocating to Houston to be near their daughter Mary and her family. George lived in Houston for the past 20 years.
George and Laura were always very active in the Catholic Church. They performed many hours of volunteer work for the church, including being Eucharistic ministers for the sick and elderly.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Skees and husband Pat of Houston; Margi Ludwig and husband Cary of North Carolina; and Michele Messick of Plano. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be held at Klein Funeral Home Champion Forest on Sunday, August 28, 2016 from 4-6 PM. Funeral services will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 10:30am, followed by a military burial at Houston National Cemetery at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations in George's name can be made to Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org or mailed to PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
