?Genevieve Palmer Stephens, a long-time resident of the Champions area of Houston, died in her home in the early morning hours of November 10, 2017, surrounded by loved ones.
Born April 10, 1936, to Albert Stone and Jo Campbell Palmer, Genevieve spent most of her childhood and early adult years in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was a 1953 graduate of C.E. Byrd High School and a 1957 graduate of Centenary College. She met her husband, Carl Millard Stephens, Jr., in college and they were married in June 1957.
Genevieve taught school for the first five years of her career, both in Leesville, LA, and in Shreveport. After taking some time to raise her sons, she returned to teaching school in Houston for another three years.Genevieve felt a calling to ministry in the church and she became the first youth director of John Wesley United Methodist Church in the late 1970s. She subsequently became the director of Christian Education for John Wesley UMC. Genevieve then returned to graduate school in the 1980s and received her Masters of Social Work from the University of Houston. She also studied to become a Diaconal Minister during the same period. She was consecrated as a Diaconal Minister, specializing in counseling ministries, by the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She spent the last part of her ministerial career as a Counseling Social Worker, both as a crisis counselor for abused women and as a Christian counselor at Northwest Assistance Ministries in Houston.
Genevieve is survived by her husband of 60 years, Carl Millard Stephens, Jr.; her sons, Carl Millard Stephens III and his wife Dawn and Alan Palmer Stephens and his wife Tracey; and her grandchildren, Adam, Daniel, Jenna, Kate, and Connor.
A service celebrating Genevieve's life and faith will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, November 17, at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 5830 Bermuda Dunes Drive, Houston, TX 77069. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. A committal service will take place at 12:30 p.m. Friday, November 17, at Houston National Cemetery, Houston.
