Gary Gene Eakin

Gary Gene Eakin, cherished son, devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, after a courageous battle with complications arising from Parkinson's disease and dementia.

Born in Liberty, Texas, on August 4, 1952, Gene was the youngest child of Joe and Dorothy Eakin. Adored by his older siblings, Joe Edward, Larry Dan, and Lana Bess, he grew up surrounded by love and laughter. His early years were spent moving across East Texas as his father served as a school administrator and superintendent, but Gene's passions remained constant: basketball, playing drums, and a lifelong love of golf, inspired by his brother Dan.

Gene graduated from Leggett High School in 1970 and earned an Associate of Business degree from Angelina Junior College, where he played basketball for the Roadrunners. After a brief hiatus, he continued his education at the University of Houston, joining the golf team for two years, and later completed his degree in Physical Education at Sam Houston State University in 1976. It was there that he met Lyn, the love of his life. They married on March 6, 1976, and began their journey together in Houston, close to family and opportunity.

Gene's professional path was as dynamic as it was successful. He worked in small businesses, managed a golf shop, and served as a Golf Pro at Willowisp Country Club. Eventually, he found his calling in pharmaceutical and orthodontic sales, beginning with Rorer Pharmaceuticals. Over the next 25 years, Gene rose through the ranks, managing territories across Texas and the central United States, and earning a national manager role that briefly took him to San Diego. His career was marked not only by achievement but by enduring friendships and well-earned vacations celebrating his success.

In 1983, Gene and Lyn welcomed twins, Shelby and David. Though David passed shortly after birth, his memory remained a cherished part of their family. In 1986, their son Steven was born, completing their loving household. Gene was a hands-on father, attending Girl Scout dances with Shelby, cheering Shelby on at dance competitions, and volunteering with Special Olympics of Texas alongside Steven. The family shared countless adventures to San Antonio, Galveston, Disney World, the Cayman Islands, and Sanibel Island and created lasting memories.
A founding member of Longwood Community Golf Club in Cypress, Texas, Gene found joy and camaraderie on the golf course. Though quiet by nature, he was known for his persistence, gentle humor, and kind spirit. His quirky jokes and expressive smiles could brighten any room, and these qualities sustained him through the challenges of Parkinson's and dementia.

Gene retired in 2012, focusing on his health and supporting his family, especially during Steven's battle with cancer, a fight Steven sadly lost in 2021. Despite his own struggles, Gene remained resilient, undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation surgery in 2023. Though the procedure eased his physical symptoms, dementia continued to progress. He and Lyn moved to a senior living community, where they found comfort in new friendships and enriching activities.

Even in his final years, Gene's radiant smile, heartfelt hugs, and perfectly timed jokes remained a testament to his enduring spirit. His family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and friends who supported Gene with compassion and dignity.

Gene is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lyn; daughter Shelby Yllana and her husband Arfeo; and three grandchildren, Xavier, Delphine, and Norah.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Special Olympics of Texas or the Houston Parkinson's Society, organizations close to Gene's heart.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 17, at Klein Funeral Home - CyFair Northwest, 9719 Wortham Blvd., Houston, TX 77065. Friends are welcome to visit with the family beginning at 1 p.m. Following the service, interment will take place at Klein Memorial Park in Cypress.
