Fred E. Gibbs, age 89, passed away February 21, 2021. He was born February 22, 1931 in Willis, Texas to Ethel M. and Harold T. Gibbs. Fred grew up in Houston, attended Houston public schools, and graduated from John H. Reagan Senior High in 1949. He majored in Mechanical Engineering at Rice University, earning BA (1953) and BSME (1954) degrees. He served two years in the United States Army and served in Korea, and then started a long career with Shell Oil Company as a Mechanical/Facilities Engineer. He retired in 1989 as a Senior-Staff Facilities Engineer after 35 years of service.
Fred married Norma Lee Wofford in 1957. During their 63-year marriage, they made their homes in Midland, Texas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Houston, where they were long-time members and workers in Champion Forest Baptist Church.
Fred is survived by his wife Norma, daughter Janet and son-in-law Michael TerLouw, son Steven and daughter-in-law Jacqueline Gibbs, four granddaughters: Michelle and Matt Hurtado, Jennifer TerLouw, Haley and Daniel Manusis, Emma Gibbs and great-grandson Lucas Hurtado. He is also survived by his sister Rose Warren and niece Daughn and Ben Pruitt, and brother-and-sister-in-law Bill and Doris Newman.
A celebration of Fred's life will be held later at a date and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Champions Forest Baptist Church (https://www.championforest.org/volunteer/giving/options/) or Star of Hope Mission (https://www.sohmission.org/ways-to-give/memorials-and-tributes/).
