Fred Robert Boyett
1930 - 2021

Fred R. Boyett was born in Texas on August 26, 1930, the eldest of three children of Fred Taylor Boyett and Ruby Lou Culverhouse. An excellent high school record led to a full academic scholarship at Rice University, where he earned a BA degree in 1951.

He married Dorothy Clare Hunke in 1951, then joined US Customs as an Examiner's Aid in 1952. He rose rapidly through the Customs ranks in various Examiner and Appraiser roles, then played a key role in planning for a major Customs reorganization. In 1966 he was promoted to the Senior Executive level and appointed Regional Commissioner for Region IX (Chicago). His widely recognized leadership successes in Chicago led to appointment as Regional Commissioner for the New York TriState region and promotion to GS-18, the first such grade in federal service outside of Washington DC. Transferred to Washington as Special Assistant to the Customs Commissioner in 1980, he finished his career as Asst. Regional Commissioner in Houston in 1987.

Fred received numerous prestigious awards during his distinguished 35 year career including the Nixon Presidental Award for Management Improvement (1972); the VFW's J. Edgar Hoover Gold Medal for Excellence in Public Service and Law Enforcement (1979); the Treasury Department's Albert Gallatin Award for career achievement (1987) and countless other awards from the Customs Service and numerous organizations within and outside government. He also served on the New York Federal Executive Board from 1971-1980.

Fred and Dorothy raised five children with love and devotion and passed on to them a great love for their country, and the importance of faith, character and integrity in life. Fred loved hunting and fishing, and competed fiercely in golf for many years at Northgate Country Club where he served as president of the Senior Golf Asssociation and was a proud recipient of a highly coveted green jacket for winning the senior match play championship. He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of nearly 70 years, and was greatly loved by his five children, fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. His life was a race well run, and we look forward to seeing him again in the presence of the Lord.
