Obituary

Ferris Bevins, 92, passed away at home in Houston, Texas on June 24, 2024.

Ferris was born on November 1, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan to Frederick Kiehler and Nettie Rhodes Kiehler.  She was named after her aunt, Ferris Rhodes, who was christened on the first ferris wheel at the Chicago World's Fair.  It is a fitting name for a woman who lived her life with joy.

Her sister, Floranne Kiehler Sartorius, and Ferris grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. She graduated at the top of her class from Phoenix's North High School and went on to the University of Arizona in Tucson.  It was there that she met the love of her life, Richard Alden Bevins.  Ferris was just twenty-six days older than Dick.  After sixty-eight years of marriage, they were separated for only a short time with Dick passing shortly after Ferris.  They are joyfully together.

She was a caring wife, mother and grandmother. Using her degree in Home Economics, she cooked for a local TV show in New Jersey; taught cooking classes at the Happy Cooker and created the menu for The Bluebonnet Café in Old Town Spring; and inspired a love for cooking in her children and grandchildren.  She was a Girl Scout Leader particularly remembered by many for canoe trips on Texas rivers. Dick and she loved to travel, especially with family.

While Alzheimer's slowly took mom from us, her core of joy remained. We are grateful for the kind and loving care provided by Hearts at Home.

All who knew her will remember her smile, silly names for things, and her sweet, joyful disposition particularly her children, Jill Bevins Oliver and Douglas Richard Bevins; son-in-law, Paul Oliver; and her grandchildren, Helena Ferris Oliver, Elissa Claire Oliver Gonzalez, Sophie Marie Bevins, and Elissa's husband, Pablo Gonzalez.
