Obituary

Leon was born on February 6, 1934 to Walter Otto Markert and Augusta Emily Markert in Giddings, Texas.
He was received into Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings, Texas through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on February 11, 1934, by Pastor Max Studtmann. He was confirmed in the Christian Faith on March 30, 1947 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings, Texas also by Pastor Max Studtmann. Leon married his wife, Viola Schulz on April 17, 1955 at St Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas. They had two daughters, Deborah Markert Streetman and Sherry Markert Mankin. Leon served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was a mechanic by trade when he first started his career at Sinclair. For many years he worked part-time in the evenings and on weekends providing tractor work services spreading dirt, leveling lots or acreage, and mowing. Leon retired from Texas Department of Transportation after 31 years of service where he was supervisor over the heavy equipment and welding departments.
Leon loved and enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He always put his wife and his family's needs before his own. He also liked visiting and spending time with his family, neighbors, and friends. He enjoyed the outdoors going deer hunting and fishing, gardening, and liked to barbeque. He loved taking his family out to eat for special occasions and loved to joke around. Even when he was not feeling well and in the hospital or spending time at the hospital with Viola, he liked joking around with the nurses. Most important he loved his Lord and Savior. He read and spoke about the Bible often and would quote scripture to his wife and daughters.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, and four brothers.
