Obituary

Emma was born on December 29, 1922, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and passed away on June 8, 2018, in The Woodlands, Texas.  Her parents were Ivan Paul Mathis and Helen Blackburn Mathis.  Emma was the oldest of four girls who were said to be the "prettiest girls in Lake Charles."  Both of their parents died when the girls were still in their teens so Emma helped to raise her younger sisters.  In the 40s she moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she got a job on an Air Force base and there she met Fred Ryder, the love of her life.  Emma just loved a man in uniform and both were very good dancers and attended many dances on the base.  They eventually married and were married over 50 years.  Fred passed away in 1998 and Emma never remarried.

Being in the Air Force,  Emma and Fred moved around and lived in Panama City, Florida, Wichita Falls, Texas, Galveston, Texas, and ultimately settled in Houston, Texas, where Emma's sister Evelyn and her husband lived.  Emma was a loving wife, mom, grandma, sister, and a friend to many.  She was an excellent cook and was known for her shrimp gumbo and her ambrosia.

In her later years she had a small stroke and developed dementia, but her sense of humor and good nature never left her.  She was very loving toward everyone she encountered.  She moved to Regent Care Center in The Woodlands where she was close to her daughter and son-in-law.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; her son, Fred Jr.; sisters, Evelyn Echols, Florence Hatch, and Madeline Cappo; and her sister-in-law, Mary Haveman.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Russell Robinson of The Woodlands, Texas; her grandchildren, Will Morriss and Heather Morriss; and her nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Regent Care Center, 10450 Gosling Road, The Woodlands, Texas.
