Obituary

Eleanor Hawley Sommer, beloved wife, mother, daughter, and friend, passed away on Tuesday, the 11th of April 2017 surrounded by her family. She leaves behind her husband Herbert William Sommer, they were married on May 14, 1966 and celebrated 50 years of marriage last year. Also she leaves behind her 3 children; Robert Sommer, Christine Hodges, Kenneth Sommer and 6 grandchildren.

Eleanor was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 2, 1943, daughter of Wilfred and Mary Clark. She was the older of two children and had the good fortune to grow up in a loving family with her mom, dad and her brother in Queens, New York as well as a large extended family that she loved dearly.

Eleanor was a driven professional, in New York she worked at Morgan Guaranty Trust Company Of New York in government bond trading. After she married she stayed home and raised her children. In 1979 she and her family made a decision to move across the country to Texas. After her children had grown she chose to pursue a career with a fire investigation company which she found very rewarding. She managed an INS Investigation office which conducts fire cause and origin investigations for a magnitude of different private and government agencies. In her spare time Eleanor had a secret love of going to thrift vintage clothing stores.

In 1998 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she bravely fought through her battle and went on to help many others diagnosed with breast cancer. A huge part of her recovery was research and education about the disease and sharing her knowledge with others. Along with her cancer diagnosis she also battled rheumatoid arthritis, she had her loving husband and father constantly by her side with continual support. Sadly in Eleanor's last days she could barely communicate but somehow she found the strength to look us straight in the eye and tell us "I am a fighter". She would still gather the strength to lean forward and kiss our cheek when we asked. It was not until after we convinced our beloved fighter that it was ok to let go, that we would be there to help her on her journey that she eased our suffering and went with god to join her mom, dad and brother again.

The family would especially like to thank all her friends who helped us through this difficult time.

Eleanor's family will receive friends Wednesday April 19, 2017 from 5:00 – 8:00 at Klein Funeral Home, 16131 Champion Forest Dr. Spring, Texas. Funeral services will be Thursday April 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, 26777 Glen Loch Dr., Spring, Texas 77381.
