It is with great sadness that the McHattie family announces the death of their wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, Eleanor Mae Wehnes McHattie.
Eleanor was born May 6, 1929, in Youngstown, Ohio to Howard and Eda Wehnes where she was the towhead middle child of three. Eleanor went on to be the first in her family to attend and graduate college. It was at Youngstown Community College in a summer program that Eleanor met a boy who also attended Bob Jones University during the school year and the rest is history as they say. Eleanor graduated from Bob Jones University with her BS/Accounting degree in 1953 and later that same year married that boy, Irvin McHattie. Due to Irvin being on the Army's schedule, they had a Thanksgiving Day ceremony. They spent the first years of their marriage living in Germany before returning to Pennsylvania/Ohio area to start their family, having three children: Pamela, Kenneth, and Marcia. The family moved to Houston in 1976 where Eleanor worked as an office manager for Skyline Equipment. She volunteered countless hours at Champion Forest Baptist Church. Her favorite place to volunteer was the church library, but the Wednesday night "WOW" kids' choir where she, along with Irvin, were hymn listeners was special as well, as it earned her extra hugs from her youngest granddaughters as well as hundreds of kids throughout the years.
Irvin and Eleanor celebrated their 69th Wedding Anniversary this past November, quite a milestone. They just celebrated each other's 93rd and 94th birthdays, respectively. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved sister and brother-in-law, Betty (Russell) Martin and her little brother, Howard Wehnes. Eleanor is survived by her husband, Irvin, daughter Pam & husband Merle White, son Ken and wife, Leisa McHattie and daughter Marcia and husband Wade Brewer. Eleanor was grandma to Matthew (Abby) White, Jason (Emma) White, Joshua (Ashley) White, Rebekah White, Trey (Ashley) McHattie, Anne (Cameron) Martin, Julia (Augustus) Brewer Billingsley and Rachel Brewer. Eleanor was also blessed to have fourteen great grandchildren: Mitchell, Laura & Zachary White, Wallace and Margaret White, Lyla, Josiah, Jacob, & Asa White, Sierra, Ella & Caleb Redus and the newest great grands, Sybil, and Maren Martin. They started quite a family!
The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Champion Forest Baptist Church Library (Attn: Jane Hope, 15555 Stuebner Airline, Houston, TX 77069.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 5th at 9am at Klein Funeral Home Champions, followed by a service at 10am. The family will have a private burial service at the VA Cemetery.
